The Dash
by Linda Ellis

I read of a man who stood to speak
At the funeral of a friend.
He referred to the dates on her tombstone
From the beginning to the end.

He noted that first came the date of her birth
And spoke of the following date with tears,
But he said what mattered most of all
Was the dash between those years.

For that dash represents all the time
That she spent alive on earth
And now only those who loved her
Know what that little line is worth.

For it matters not, how much we own,
The cars, the house, the cash,
What matters is how we live and love
And how we spend our dash.

So think about this long and hard;
Are there things you'd like to change?
For you never know how much time is left
That can still be rearranged.

If we could just slow down enough
To consider what's true and real
And always try to understand
The way other people feel.

And be less quick to anger
And show appreciation more
And love the people in our lives
Like we've never loved before.

If we treat each other with respect
And more often wear a smile,
Remembering that this special dash
Might only last a little while.

So when your eulogy is being read
With your life's actions to rehash
Would you be proud of the things they say
About how you spent your dash?

Dorothy Helen Goodhind

AMHERST – Dorothy Helen Goodhind, 90, of 67 North Whitney Street, passed away quietly at home in the early morning hours of Tuesday, June 19 (2007).  She is missed already more than words can say.

She was born December 24, 1916 in Adams, MA to Murray M. Goodhind and Henrietta M. Hawver, the fourth of 13 children.  She attended schools in Massachusetts and Chatham, NY.

Never married, Dorothy made her home with her parents until her father died in 1956, then with her mother until she died in 1981; thereafter, she had made her home in Amherst with her sister Ginny for over 25 years.

Aunt Dot worked hard all her life.  During World War II, she and her sister Ginny made rifles at the Springfield Armory.  She worked as a cook for Kane’s Nursing Home in Amherst for 20 years until it closed.  Her last position before finally retiring was as a cook for the UMASS sorority Sigma Kappa on Allen Street.  But without a doubt, her most important job was as the “glue” that has held our large, growing family together over the years.  She enjoyed cooking, crossword puzzles, watching golf and tennis on television, and was a life-long fan of the Red Sox.  She was a great lover of cats of any kind.  Being born on Christmas Eve Day and being one of 13 children, she was often asked over the years if she ever felt shortchanged on birthday celebrations; she always had the same firm reply: “Never!”

Survivors include her sister, Virginia M. Facto of Amherst, her brothers Arthur D. Goodhind and his wife Barbara of Shutesbury, and Albert “Bucky” Goodhind and his wife Anne of Palmer, her sister-in-laws Jean Goodhind of Easthampton and Patricia Goodhind of Dupont, WA.  She has 70 nieces and nephews, including Timothy Goodhind and his wife Susan of Sunderland, Patrick Masloski and his wife Deborah of Westfield and niece-in-law Barbara Goodhind of Hatfield, widow of Michael.  There are dozens of grandnieces and nephews.  Dorothy is also survived by her very dearest of friends, Denise-Renee Barberet of Amherst.  Dorothy was predeceased by her brothers Malcolm and his wife Marjorie, Murray Jr., John and his wife Marion, Edward and his wife Genevieve, Richard and his wife Anne, and Gilbert Goodhind, and her sisters Luella Coyne and her husband Jim, Charlotte Masloski and Lorena Goodhind.

Calling hours will be at Wrisley Funeral Home, Sugarloaf Street, South Deerfield on Thursday evening from 5-8 p.m. and again from 10-11 a.m. on Friday.  A short service will be held at the funeral home at 11 a.m. prior to burial at South Amherst cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Dakin Animal Shelter, 163 Montague Road, Leverett, MA  01054 or Baystate VNA & Hospice, 101 Munson St., PO Box 1558, Greenfield, MA  01302.
